Jan 1, 2010 · I can clear the code and after it cranks for about 3-5 seconds, the code comes back. Also, over the past few weeks, I've had an intermittent P1391 code (Intermittent Loss of CMP or CKP) that is probably related. I could clear that one out but it would come back after driving for about 10-20 minutes. Not showing the 1391 code now, just the P0340.

An intermittent crankshaft position sensor can cause a P0344. You could also have an issue with the so called tone wheel being loose or damaged. Techs sometimes put a scope on the sensor and look at the waveforms. If the sensor is not completely flush with the timing cover before tightening it, it may be damaged.
